Uptown New Orleans is on the East Bank of the Mississippi River and encompasses a number of areas between the French Quarter, and the Jefferson Parish line. Uptown was built along the higher ground along an old natural river levee of a wide gradual bend of the Mississippi.


Today, Uptown is an area with mixed residential neighborhoods, quaint commercial properties and ornamented with a plethora of southern live oak trees and 19th century architecture. Uptown is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, as much of the area had originally been plantation land from the Colonial Era. Some of the main streets in the area include the historic Magazine Street, where you will find locally owned ,one of a kind shops, restaurants and art galleries. St. Charles Avenue is renowned for its famous Streetcar line and is adorned with several impressive architecturally significant old mansions as well as the scenic Audubon Park. Additionally, Uptown is home to campus’s for Loyola, Tulane and Xavier University. Mardi Gras Indians, second lines and Carnival parades are part of Uptown’s traditions- especially during Mardi Gras.
